7 Reasons Why You Should Netflix and Relax with the Family

Fall is officially here!! Beside football Sundays and Fall recipes, I heart, as the modern-day parent says: Netflix and Relax time!

Okay okay, I know what you are thinking and I am not talking about the millennial version of “Netflix and Chill”. I mean actually watching Netflix and Relaxing! You might think I sound lazy or just unmotivated but let me break it down for y’all:

Why Netflix and Relax time is well-spent with the family:

Reason #1:

It’s one of those rare weekends when, as a family, you actually have no plans…like all day!! Rare and beautiful!

Reason #2:

You devote yourself fully to ignoring all work, house chores, and personal goals that need to be done. As in, “no, large pile of laundry, you will not be able to command my attention today”! 🙂

Reason #3:

Your children hang out with you… especially teenagers.  The teenager who would usually rather sleep all day or Snapchat friends get wrapped into the chosen Netflix series and spends real-time with you.

Reason #4:

The family talks. I know this sounds silly because you are all staring at the same tv…… which isn’t necessarily a recipe for quality conversation time. But the talking that happens is authentic and not forced and usually takes in the shape of “Mom have you ever done that?” or “Dad have you ever been there?” or “I wanna do that when I grow up”. It is awesome information that parents otherwise may never get.

How Netflix and Relax time can naturally free up schedules:

Reason #5:

Everyone in the house forgets their troubles for a whole day. No schedules, no agendas, no worries…just comfy clothes, snacks, and couches.

Reason #6:

Giggling, crying, smiling, cheering… all emotions you witness during a Nexflix binge — even if it is about fictional characters… you get to see what makes your kids and your husband happy, what makes them sympathetic, what makes them feel empathy or joy.

Reason #7:

Time to enjoy your little inner circle of people. These Netflix and Relax days may not be the days that create photo memories that litter the pages of social media feeds but they are the days that make memories that last.

I don’t know about you but I will do anything it takes to embrace these kinds of blessed days where we get to be with each other. In a day where memories are easier to capture than they are to make, Netflix and Relax time may continue to be my favorite!!

What’s your favorite and unexpected time well-spent with your family in today’s world?

Would you give some recommendations for things that families with teens might enjoy watching together? Or shows that your family has enjoyed. Thank you!!

Hi, yes, we like to throw it back to the 80s movies, such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Princess Bride, Beetlejuice, Goonies, Back To The Future, etc and for series, we like to watch: “13 Reason Why” (this one has some serious topics to help discuss difficult topics), Heart of Dixie, Nailed It! (cooking series), Stranger Things, etc. ?

It does seem like watching sports and movies is the one thing we can get our teenage boys to do with us. Can I ask what series you recommend on Netflix? We don’t have it, but it might be worth getting if we knew there was some quality shows to watch.

I Ashley, same here and so happy to hear this. Our teen boys LOVE Stranger Things Netflix Series and the cooking series: Nailed It!. We also started to watch “13 Reason Why” (this one has some serious topics to help discuss difficult topics), etc. These have been good ones so far and big conversations starters in our home. 🙂

We would be grateful for some Netflix movie/tv series recommendations to watch with our teens (daughters 17 & 20). We have not done much with Netflix so would be grateful for some good recommendations that will spur good conversation.

Hi Tracy, absolutely and our teen daughters love the series such as: The Fosters, Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, Stranger Things, etc. For movies, we love the 80s flicks that Netflix adds each month, like: Goonies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Adventures in Babysitting, etc. 🙂

Awesome and the shows or movies we’ve chosen really depend on the age. Since our kids are all teenagers, we like to throw it back to the 80s movies, such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Princess Bride, Beetlejuice, Goonies, Back To The Future, etc and for series, we like to watch: “13 Reason Why” (this one has some serious topics to help discuss difficult topics), Heart of Dixie, Nailed It! Hope this helps. We love these!!
